Commodity trading practice

Disciplined commodity trading and risk advisory for global markets.

Physical and financial commodity trading, hedging strategy, and cross-border risk advisory for producers, consumers, and institutional counterparties. Our work is built on a clear thesis, a defensible framework, and the quiet preference for being right over being loud.

Approach to risk

A risk framework is only useful if the firm can act on it.

We treat risk policy and risk operations as a single subject. A model that decomposes volatility well, but reports into a committee that meets quarterly with a fixed agenda, will produce excellent insights that arrive too late to act on. The reverse — responsive governance without analytical machinery — is no better.

Our framework rests on three principles: separate mechanical, informational, and structural volatility; size positions and hedges to the exposure rather than the available product; and design governance so that the right people have authority at the moment that authority needs to be exercised.

We are explicit about the limits of any framework. Markets do things that frameworks do not anticipate. The discipline is not to anticipate everything; it is to be wrong about the right things, and to recover quickly when wrong.

Capabilities

Where we engage.

Physical commodity execution
Sourcing, structuring, and execution across selected physical commodity markets. We work with producers and end-users on contract design, logistics coordination, and counterparty diligence.
Hedging strategy and program design
Hedging frameworks for corporate consumers and producers, designed around the firm's actual risk — not the risk that is easiest to hedge. Built to be governable, auditable, and resilient through a full commodity cycle.
Cross-border trade advisory
Advisory on counterparty risk, jurisdictional considerations, and structural choices for firms moving physical commodities across borders. Practical, not theoretical.
Risk policy and governance
Design and review of risk policies, mandate documents, and governance structures for trading activity. We help boards and risk committees set bands they can defend, monitor, and enforce.
Independent program review
Structured review of an existing trading or hedging program — strategy, execution, governance, measurement — for boards and executive teams seeking an independent second view.

Markets

Selected markets, by deliberate choice.

We are deliberately narrow. Rather than offering coverage across every commodity market, we maintain depth in a small set of physical and financial markets where our framework, network, and counterparty relationships are genuinely differentiated.

  • Energy and refined products
  • Industrial metals
  • Agricultural commodities
  • Selected soft and specialty markets

Specific market coverage is shared on a confidential basis with prospective counterparties. Contact our trading desk.

Coordination with consulting

One firm, two practices, integrated when it matters.

For corporate clients with material commodity exposure, our consulting and trading practices regularly collaborate. The combination is particularly relevant where hedging policy intersects governance, where commodity strategy intersects operational design, or where a firm is reviewing both its operating model and its risk framework concurrently.

Trading and risk inquiries are reviewed by a partner.
